UPDATE:: See this post and this one!!
Okay, so we revealed our BIG Summer Slam event today. So instead of doing VBS – Summer Slam is a 2 day event that will feature a BMX Stunt show on day 1 with games and inflatables and concessions and then on Day 2 – a hyped up, awesome worship service we hope people come back for.
Day 1 – The BMX Show is done by a company we’re bringing in from out of state. They do stunts, ramps, etc. and giveĀ an encouraging message on bike safety. We’re giving away 3 bikes and 50 bike helmets, as well as other misc. prizes. There will be other activities for the children. They are doing 2 shows. The local contemporary, radio station IS covering it! Woo Hoo!!!!! That is MAJOR publicity and a draw for people.
Day 2 – Our worship is going to be over the top. A bit different than what we’re used to at Dutch Fork, we’re gonna take off the shackles and dance! Our message is about wiping out in life and the kids programs will be over the top as well. We’re going to be giving a glimpse of our new kids programs for the fall.
It’s gonna be AWESOME! We need around 50 volunteers to make it happen. And a TON of prayer! Pray for good weather, safety, HUGE crowd, just that all planning comes together.
Here’s our promo video we showed in church yesterday.
Michelle,

Wonderful. Let’s compete with Barnum and Bailey. I wonder, will the kids on day 2 be told they are sinners and need to repent before a holy God?? Perhaps they’ll realize it when they see the spectacular BMX performance. After all, I understand those are just full of scripture. Perhaps on day 2 after they have gyrated all over the place, they’ll be told that is all that is needed to please God. My, my, haven’t we just succumbed to the lowest possible denominator: a huge numbers game!!
Shame on you all!!
Greg, Actually on day 2, yes the kids were taught exactly that. Is it wrong for a church to have a family friendly event that isn’t a church service? No. We were being the church by reaching out to our community. No, the BMX demo. wasn’t a salvation/gospel driven message. Gasp! A Bible verse wasn’t even mentioned, but we were loving families. We were believing what the BIble says about the body being a temple of the Holy Spirit and the message given was on bike safety and helmet usage. Kids need to be safe on their bikes. We care about people. We care about children. As far as gyrating moves — nah, didn’t have any of those, unless you count the shimmy of my hips as I walked on the platform to make announcements. Numbers game? Nope. Just reaching out to a community. Day 2 was telling people about Jesus and His saving grace. Before you go casting stones and making judgments, get to know me. Get to know our church and what we’re about.
